| Overview |
|
Miniature schnauzers are spirited yet obedient family dogs. They usually enjoy, and are responsive to early socialization and obedience training.
Miniature schnauzers enjoy the company of children and other animals, especially if raised with them from an early age. Miniature Schnauzers originated from dogs that were bred to chase vermin thus the ability to chase moving objects is an inborn quality (look out Frisbees and balls). Dogs are very much like people, they need attention, love and affection. They can be as demanding as little children. If they are to grow up happy and healthy, both physically and mentally, you should give them very careful attention. Your Schnauzer is a sturdy and sometimes independent little dog. He won’t need excessive care or pampering. He will adapt to any climate or living condition, but he will need help in getting used to his new home, help in the form of companionship and understanding. Spend some quality time with your pet every day, in addition to the time spent providing food and water. Learn what to expect from him, while he is learning what you expect of him. Most of all ENJOY. He will be a member of the family for years to come.
Appearance
The miniature schnauzer has a dense, profuse beard and bushy, bristly eyebrows. Its outercoat is hard and wiry; the undercoat is very short. Coat color is salt-and-pepper, black and silver, or solid black.
Grooming And Exercise Needs
The miniature schnauzer does not shed and if brushed and combed regularly he will always look well groomed. If your dog becomes accustomed to brushing as a puppy , he will enjoy it. Your dog will seldom need a bath, as Miniature Schnauzers have no body odor, but the leg furnishings and the whiskers should be washed fairly often. He will need to be groomed every 2 to 3 months. This dog loves long walks but may forgo exercise on rainy days.
Origins
The bushy-muzzled miniature schnauzer, named after the German word for nose or muzzle, was developed from affenpinscher, giant schnauzer, and miniature pinscher bloodlines in the 19th century in Germany. An old and renowned breed, the Schnauzer is also known for his physical beauty. The well-proportioned compactness of the Schnauzer undoubtedly has much to do with his popularity but many people attribute his widespread appeal to his intelligence, disposition, and his adaptability. |
