- 8. How soon will I get my registration papers?
We send all papers as soon as they are available to us. This typically takes 2-4 weeks.
9. How do I register my puppy?
You will be sent an AKC application to register your puppy. You will need to choose a name, make sure your address is correct, include payment and send the application to AKC. The address is on the application. You will typically receive your permanent papers in 2-3 weeks.
10. How do I activate my microchip? We use HomeAgain microchips. The enrollment form and collar tag will be included on the crate when your puppy arrives. Moonlight Kennels has filled out their portion of the form and you will need to finish it with your information and send to HOMEAGAIN PET RECOVERY SERVICE. A postage free envelope will be included. At this time the cost for a lifetime enrollment of the microchip is $17.50.
11. What is a microchip?
Each HomeAgain microchip is designed with the express purpose of storing and transmitting a unique alphanumeric code. This code represents your pet’s essential identification. The size of the HomeAgain microchip is one of its most significant features. About the size of a grain of rice, the microchip is so small it cannot be seen once it has been implanted.
12. I can't find the papers--where are they? The essential papers, microchip enrollment, copy of vaccination record, health certificate are in a zip lock bag taped to the shipping crate. The AKC papers, pedigree, birth certificate, and original vaccination papers will be mailed by USPS.
13. Should I get a male puppy or a female puppy?
I would prefer to send boys home with families with kids because they like to be in the middle of the fun, females tend to tire of it all and find a place to be out of the way not to be bothered. See article: Male versus female Which should I choose?
14. What kind of dog is best with children?
In my opinion Miniature Schnauzers are one of the best breeds of dogs for children. They are very attentive and enjoy every thing from dressing up with the girls to playing chase with the boys. They are sturdy enough to keep up with most children. If you prefer a Yorkie, PLEASE choose one that is big enough to not be harmed by unintential rowdy play. A dog under 5 pound is best suited for adults.
15. Are Yorkies/Miniature Schnauzers hypoallergenic? Mini Schnauzer are on the top 10 list with AKC as being hypoallergenic. Yorkies have very close to "human" type hair with no undercoat. Although they do need daily grooming they do not shed.
16. How do you know how much a puppy will weigh? In Yorkshire Terriers the rule of thumb is to double the 12 week weight to get an average adult weight. But remember that just as people Yorkies can become very overweight. It is possible for a dog of a healthy weight of 5 pounds can easily weight 7 pounds after repeated visits to the table!! Stick to the dry dog food with few treats!
17. Are the prices negotiable? We do not negotiate on the prices.
18. Do you have any "runts" that are less expensive?--What is a "runt" anyway? A frequent question: "I am looking for the "runt" so the price will be less won't it? The most sought after puppy is the smallest Yorkie females. A runt suggest that something is wrong with the puppy's health to cause her to be small. As a heart problem. Any Yorkie is a small dog. Some are just smaller than others naturally thru genetics. Schnauzers are a sturdy breed that will weigh at adulthood 12-20 pounds. I have heard of others weighting 30 pounds (very overweight). We do not have runt Schnauzers!! Most of our Schnauzers will be from 12-16 pounds.
19. Will the puppy be housebroken? We start puppies on paper training. When weather permits we take them outside. We do not have the time to commit to each individual puppy to housetrain. A housetraining article will be included with each puppy.
20. How should I feed my puppy? Schnauzer will be old enough to start on a 2 times a day feeding schedule. Most Yorkies will need to be fed 3-4 times a day because of their small size. We feed and recommend Eukanuba small puppy food dry only.
